Kind Words in Our Anxious World

Daily Reading: Genesis 12, Psalm 12, Matthew 12, Proverbs 12

Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.

Proverbs 12:25

Anxiety.

If there was one word that I could use to describe the state of our world today, that might be it.

There are so many global and local reasons to experience anxiety every single day. In my 40+ years on this earth, I don’t know if there has ever been a time that has felt less settled. Much of the stability we may have come to take for granted in the Western world, feels like it is on very thin ice. In some cases it feels like the ice has already broken and we are just attempting to not get pulled under.

Anxiety.

Simultaneously, we have never had more access to news from every corner of the globe. In the past, we might be vaguely aware of crazy things taking place in another state or another country, but you really had to actively seek out more information if you wanted to know more. Today, it comes at us fast and furious if we are online at all.

We are bombarded constantly by the worst things happening at any given moment, in any given location, and it never lets up.

Anxiety.

With the invention of the smart phone, we are constantly pulled away from the present moment that we are in by the siren song of subtle vibration in our pocket. We jump from notification to notification, and rarely take time to simply be present.

When we struggle to live in the present moment, anxiety follows.

Psalm 46:10 tells us to: “Be still, and know that I am God.”

Be still.

One of God’s most challenging commandments in the Bible for today’s modern world.

And all of these modern causes of anxiety are before we even mention our own personal lives. How we are doing in school, how our job is going, our current financial situation, our car breaking down, the medical condition a loved one is battling, strife in our relationships and the list goes on.

Anxiety.

We are flooded with it.

And it weighs down the heart.

“Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.”

It is amazing how true this is. I can think of so many times in my life where I was completely in my own head, not sleeping well, unable to quiet my mind, and my heart was definitely heavy.

And then came a kind word.

It is amazing the impact a kind word can have.

When another person takes the time to connect with you on a human level, and chooses to lift you up with a kind word, it can have such a profound impact.

“Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.”

What would our world look like if every Christian woke up each day determined to find at least one person they were going to lift up today with a kind word?

What would happen if we were to focus less on the things weighing us down and instead were determined to be a shining light for others?

I have found over and over again throughout my life that my heart is significantly lighter when I stop worrying as much about myself, and instead choose to focus on having a positive impact on the lives of others.

We live in an anxious world. In 2026, let’s remember the power of a kind word.
