We Are Made for Community
Daily Reading: Genesis 46, Psalm 46, Acts 2, Proverbs 15
They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
Acts 2:42-47
We were made to be in community.
Acts paints a beautiful picture today of exactly what God desires for his community of believers.
They devoted themselves to teaching and fellowship.
They gathered daily in each other’s homes to share meals, spend time in prayer, and praise God through worship.
They were constantly out in their community and people were being saved daily.
This hit me like a ton of bricks today.
I have been sorely missing this type of connection over the last several years.
In this post-Covid world I think that lots of people struggle with connection. We have exchanged in person connection with social media interactions and Zoom meetings. It has become far too easy to trade in deep, meaningful personal relationships for a larger number of surface level acquaintances.
This morning I wrestled with why I was feeling this way while reading Acts 2:42-47.
I feel very fortunate to be blessed with lots of time spent in person and not behind a screen. Being a basketball coach, puts me out there in the real world almost every day of the week. In my job, it is largely mentoring and leading my team, and I have the privilege of going deep with them and helping them in their lives inside and outside of work. I try to be intentional to get quality time with my kids. My wife and I guard a date night each week.
Why was I feeling this lack of connection?
I realized this morning the reason.
I miss spending time with other Christian outside of the Sunday service.
I miss the morning worship that I used to attend once a week, where we just set aside time to praise God, and devote time to prayer.
I miss meeting every Friday for lunch with my men’s group and sharing what is happening in life and our walk with Christ.
I miss this Christian fellowship.
All of the other times are amazing, and I am so thankful for them.
Nothing replaces time spent with other believers seeking after God.
Life is busy. Time is scarce. It is so easy to push these things off until a different season when “things calm down a bit”.
I want an Acts 2:42-47 heart.
It is worth making a priority.
